This piece, a companion to my ‘The Ramp’ painting, began as homage to Ozzy Osbourne and how he became a champion for Birmingham around the world. The impressive ‘Ozzy’ bull statue, used in the opening and closing ceremonies of Birmingham-hosted 2022 Commonwealth games, now stands permanently in the ‘Grand Central’ shopping concourse of New Street station. As the painting developed, I thought it might be fun to reference some other Birmingham luminaries and characters, so we have Ozzy Osbourne, Tommy and Arthur Shelby from The Peaky Blinders, Joe Lycett, Benjamin Zephaniah, Ruby Turner, Moeen Ali, Edward Burne-Jones-Jones, Laura Mvula, Professor Carl Chinn, Bob Carlogees and Spit The Dog and Sandy from Crossroads. The late Roger Tonge, who played Sandy, lived a couple of roads away from where I grew up, and Julie Walters, seen here as Mrs Overall, a mile or so down the road. I met Ruby Turner by accident back in 1986 when I was doing my school work experience at a recording studio in Bournbrook and helped set up her band’s equipment.
